Subject: Airbus 320 "lands out".

Glider pilots the world over are enjoying the success of one of our own who made headlines this week. The critical instant in this event was the moment Captain Sullenberger looked over his left shoulder at the La Guardia runway he had just lifted off from moments before and decided he could not safely make it back and then selected the river as his next destination. This is a horrendous moment in an pilot's life but more so for an airline Captain.

We are all basking in his glory and success. If you are not aware, the "ditching" of an airliner is never practiced in the simulator. There is an extensive discussion in the Flight Manual on all the proper things to do but it assumes that an extended period of preparation occurs prior to the actual landing. Captain Sullenberger had but moments from takeoff to power loss to a water landing. We should tip a glass in his direction and celebrate his accomplishment. Well done, Captain, well done! Steve.
