August 27, 2008 Subject: Checklists, What are they good for!? 40 years ago the use of a written checklist was looked upon as silly and unneccessary. If you needed one you didn't know your air machine very well. Today, checklist useage is seen as a key to a well organized flight. The checklist is a device to focus your attention on specific items that are very important for your assembly, takeoff and landing. We discourtage memorizing checklists or the use of one checklist for every machine you fly. Negative habit transfer can lead you to reply, "gear, down and locked" for years in a 2-33 with no action required. Then your first flight in a retractable gear glider results in a gear up landing, because you said, "gear, down and locked", without actually doing anything, just like you've done for years. We provide a printed checklist on the instrument panel. Use it! Steve.
