March 09, 2008 Subject: right hand on the stick, left hand in the lap A good article in the SSA magazine this month concerning "guarding the release" during launching. Placing your hand on the release, even ever so lightly will eventually result in a self induced PT3, probably at a moment when it is least desirable. This is a very bad habit and we will not tolerate it at SWS. We get some pretty rough rides below 1000' during takeoff and just a small unexpected bump may cause you to pull the release handle. The left hand positioned on you left knee keeps the hand nicely in position to reach the release in a timely fashion. This ain't the OK Corral, no quick draw skills required. A certain appropriate level of alertness and a good mental review of the PT3 plan is all that needed to assure a safe return should you need to release during takeoff. But no hands or fingers on the release. Nope, not even a gentle caring caress. Keep your mitts of the release during takeoff! Steve.
