January 12, 2008 Subject: Accident reviews A couple of interesting glider accidents have come to my attention and I want to comment on them for your consideration. Last summer a glider was lost when two pilots launched without using a checklist and the altimeter was left grossly misset. They relied on its indications and flew a wide pattern thinking they were high and (surprise!) landed short because they were actually very low. Another accident presented in the January SSA magazine (are you a member?) resulted in a PT3 event caused by the pilot encountering turbulence on takeoff and accidently releasing the rope. Why? Because he was holding the release in his hand when the turbulence hit and the sharp bump threw him back in his seat, he pulled back on the stick and on the release at less than 200'AGL. The result was a landing in the trees. Both of these accidents were the result of poor habits and perhaps poor training. The procedures used in training will serve you well throughout your flying life. The warnings, cautions and counseling your instructors have provided with you are the result of years of experience. Pay heed or pay the piper. Steve.
