October 21, 2007 Subject: What is your altitude? Normally a pilot adjusts the altimeter to the local altimeter setting in the Kollsman window, if it is available or sets the field elevation in feet. Air traffic control provides traffic advisories and separation services based on altitude. For these services to be valid everyone must be using the correct local altimeter setting. So when availing yourself of ATC services the use of the local altimeter setting is required. But there's more. Steve.
