Subject: Altitude and what is that Kollsman window for anyway?

There has been an on going controversy over the use of the altimeter by glider pilots. At SWS we have been using the altimeter as a measure of height above the runway(AGL-above ground level)surface since we (hopefully) always plan to arrive back where we departed from. We disregard the Kollsman window setting and set the altimeter to zero.

Ofcourse the other way to use the altimeter is to place the local altimeter setting in the Kollsman window and read field elevation or our mean sea level altitude (MSL). This use puts you in step with all other users of the airspace and in compliance with the FARs. Why do we do things one way versus the other? That will be discussed next. Steve.
