September 01, 2007 Subject: What about those landings? I'm seeing a trend among some very experienced and some very new sailplane pilots making an error common across all levels of pilot experience. During the final 50' of the landing approach, many pilots look too close in or stare at the apparent touchdown point when they should be shifting their view much farther down the runway to gain better perspective of the sink rate and pitch changes necessary to make the final adjustments for touchdown in the desired attitude. When you drive a car you look down the highway and its the same with landing. Look away from the touchdown point and down the runway as you make your approach. Do not stare at anything. Keep your eyes moving from 1/2 way to all the way down the runway to gain a better perspective of the required control adjustments for that sqeeker landing that we all live for. Steve.
