September 01, 2007 Subject: Iceman solos SGS 1-26E Chris and I went up to do some spin entry and recovery training and then he did a couple of flights in the 2-22. After lunch, written exam, single seat briefing and review he blasted off and found good lift staying up over 40 minutes. A little work on the landings is in order, but nothing out of the ordinary. Nice job, Chris. I spent a day in Cali, Columbia, South America this week. Sitting in a valley of the northern Andes, which tower above 20,000', this is a challenging area to fly in and out of. A lot of map and procedure study was necessary. This was my first flight into this area, so I had to go in with a Check Airman from the company training department. I am now qualified for Cali and Bogota. In the morning the mountains are an awesome sight, so close and filled with gliders out my window at the downtown hotel. The departure out of the valley is also a challenge requiring a detailed review with my First Officer of the terrain, procedures and the "what ifs", ie. engine out, loss of pressurization, etc. All pretty routine and 4:30 minutes later we were back in Houston. Steve.
